Yes, the punishment should fit the crime. I like how you are comparing cyber crimes with similar “other” crimes, if you will, and the comparison I think is definitely worth consideration. I am on the same page in that a crime is a crime, albeit a hacker that steals money from an account or a burglar that steals jewels from a home – equally punishable.

I enjoy reading your analogies, I have tried to come up with many as well but have not been as successful in relaying analogies to technology.

I actually haven’t seen the movie “Hackers” and think I will now after your input in your post!

I agree that if a hacker does a crime that harms “someone” they should be punished accordingly. I dont agree with the strict definition of the word hacker as defined by the book. That creates a biased opinion on the hacker article. All of the blogs that I read so far seem to be all about agreeing with the book. But I like how you cover some of the differences in hacker types.

I agree with everything you have said here Larry. My Chapter 4 discussion is pretty much the same answer as what you have here on hacking as well as file naming. I believe that hackers should be fined and penalized depending on the crime they do. As far as file naming I just think it would be easier for everyone else if we tried to follow some kind of a system.

I agree that all software should come with a trial to ensure it works with your system and meets your needs. I also think it’s cool that you support and donate to open source programmers. I don’t use a lot of open source programs but I hear they can be even better than those you pay for. One I do use is Firefox and I like it much better than Internet Explorer.

I agree that the only solution seems to boil down to morality, making the public aware of the situation and basically relying on people to do the right thing.

I like your opinions on these subjects. You and I agree on alot of the items covered by the questions. I really hate the software packages that do not allow for you to test it on your system before you purchase.

I don’t really think that getting my degree helped much with landing my current job. It seems to have helped me with molding my current job into what I really want to do, since before I didn’t have the programming experience to move into that area. To your other question she has her own coffin.
